refinishing cabinets

Refinishing cabinets is one of the most popular home improvement projects that homeowners choose. It can be a great way to bring a dull surface back into their homes and completely change a room’s look. However, many people do not realize how much money they can save by refinishing their cabinets instead of replacing them. In fact, refinishing your cabinets may save you up to 50% of the cost of buying brand new cabinet doors.

When you start refinishing your cabinets, you need to consider several things. First, you need to figure out if the cabinets are painted, stained, or wood-stained. If they are wood-stained then you will have more work to do than if they are painted. Painting your cabinets may require some extra steps including applying the stain, sanding it down, applying primer, painting over it, and finally adding clear lacquer or varnish to protect the new coat of stain.

Refinishing cabinets in your kitchen, on the other hand, will only take you about an hour or so. If you are replacing cabinets, then you will probably be replacing the whole kitchen cabinet set. However, when refinishing a kitchen cabinet you will only need to replace the cabinet doors and the hardware. If you are doing a refacing job on your kitchen then all you will need to do is apply the new cabinet stain and put a new handle on the cupboard.

To refinish your cabinets, you will need to remove the doors, hinges, drawer fronts, and any hardware. Remove any trim around the outside of the cabinet doors or the edges of the drawer fronts. Once you have the doors removed you will be left with the two main parts of the cabinet; the cabinet frame (the frame holding the doors together) and the cabinet drawer fronts (the parts of the front that holds the drawers). You will also need to remove the drawer fronts, including any hardware, and all of the drawers pulls.

After you have the main piece of the cabinets removed and all the hardware removed you will be left with just the doors and the base. Replacing the door fronts is pretty easy. There are many different styles of door fronts that you can choose from such as; distressed wood, painted, solid wood, glass, laminate, etc. The best thing about refacing your cabinet is the fact that you can choose the same style and colors as your current doors.

There are a few things to keep in mind before you start to stain your kitchen cabinets. First, you will want to select a stain that will not fade. You should also know that most wood stains take at least two coats of stain to provide a deep color. Therefore, you will want to purchase plenty of extra stains so that if you have any problems with stain staining you will be ready for it.

One of the easiest ways to refinish kitchen cabinets is to purchase a laminate or solid color stain and then customize the stain to match your existing cabinetry. Many people like to use a solid color stain on their kitchen cabinets to create a uniform look throughout their home. Another option is to purchase an unfinished laminate cabinet, paint it in your desired color, and then install the doors in your newly stained cabinet faces. This option costs much less than purchasing new cabinet doors. If you choose this option, be sure to allow adequate time for the laminate to dry before you apply the final layer of coating to protect your new doors.

Another option you may want to consider is using clear lacquer or veneers over wood cabinets. This is an easy and inexpensive way to refinish your kitchen cabinets. While this process does not give you the same depth of color or detail as a custom stain or a custom door, it can still make your kitchen look amazing. The downside is that you will need to remove the veneer periodically to apply new coats of lacquer. Be sure to choose a durable clear lacquer that can withstand high temperatures during installation and that has a smooth surface.
